Games under review by Semanon are as follows:
Nitro
Shadow of the beast
Infestation
(THE MONSTER PACK 1)
from PSYGNOSIS
....................
NITRO:
This game is a cute little racing game were you play against the
computer or two other drivers.
You have to win at all costs, you use any means to win your
races, and collect any items that are floating around on the
screen, but beware of the little red man, you get bonus points
for collecting the following items:
Gas: Gives you 100 units every time that it's collected.
P : A white letter 'P' gives you extra points, and the points
change from screen to screen.
N : A red letter 'N' gives you a nitro booster which makes you
go faster for a short period of time.
Money: Money you collect floating around on the road lets you
change your status when you enter the garage, ie add more gas, or
repair you car or buy a turbo booster etc.
When you enter into the game, you race around different tracks,
during the day time or at night, the more races you win, the more
points you get for the drivers table.
I managed to get to the 29th track before running out of gas,
which is very easy to do, even if the computer tells you that you
are running low on gas it is up to you to collect the gas barrels
that roll down the street.
By the way on certain tracks, the computer gives you a bonus for
running over the pedestrians, where it normally takes money off
of you.
My favourite part of this game is riding at night time (try and
keep to the cats eyes or else).
If I were to give this game marks then I would score it as
follows:
The idea is not original, so I would mark it 7 out of 10.
Games play I would mark it 8 out of 10.
Playability 8 out of 10.
Lasting interest 9 out of 10
Total 32 out of 40
Infestation:
This game has you trying to collect a load of eggs and then
destroying them before they hatch.
You must find the door way to enter into the underground
chambers, this game has a lot of keys to control different items
for you, the graphics for this game is 3D solid shapes.
The loading screen and animation at the start of this game is
well worth watching, the sound track is good also.
I found this game very hard to play, but the game type is like
that of Dungeon master, a 3D adventure.
As I said the problems I had with this game was that I could not
remember the correct key in time to survive, I was soon over
taken with ants and such so I did not last long.
To get anywhere at all in this game then you must find keys, the
keys let you enter network terminals which you have to access,
because this is the only way you can see where everything is, as
it shows you a map of the area and all you do is use your
joystick to see all around the map.
The idea of this game is good, but it is not my type of game.
So if you are looking for a game that will keep you lock into it
for a long time, then this is the game that you're looking for.
As completing this game will take you quite some time, the
program lets you format a games disk for your to store your saved
games on to, and to access the game you last saved out.
The graphics for this game are of good quality.
I found this game hard to play but if you like seek, find, and
destroy games then this is the one for you.
Well what can I say for this game?
As I said I found this game hard as I could only find one key?
If you can find more then I would like to hear from you, if I had
more keys then I would like to give this game another go.
Shadow of the beast:
This game was to be a game that had the very best of parallax
scrolling landscapes.
It was a great idea but it didn't work, sorry Psygnosis.
Let's get down to the actual game.
You control the beast through the landscapes and corridors, you
pass a well that invites you to enter it, if you don't have a key
then it's not worth while going down the well as the door at the
bottom is locked.
I lost lifes fast and furious until I try a little hint that I got
from my friend Mick, which was at the beginning of the game
instead of going right, go left first for about five trees or so,
and then count to twenty (but while you are doing this watch out
for boulders and other beasts), after counting to twenty now go
right and you will get extra lifes easier now (and boy while you
need them).
When you go further right you are met with a bombardment of
different types of beasts that you could ever imagine, these
beasts while sap you of your lifes very fast unless you get the
first strike in before they hit you.
Once you complete the first level (which will take you some time
and practice) you then enter in to the under earth, but beware of
the giant beast as you cannot defeat it without the sword, and
where do we get the sword I hear you ask, in the first level
that's where.
You have to play this game a good few times to get anywhere at
all, which brings me back to tell you about the constant disk
swapping which spoils this game, I wonder what would this game be
like if it where on the one Disk?
I have a list of weapons and where they can be found, if you want
them, then drop me a letter via Sten.
For a game that starts with a great picture and fantastic music,
only to be spoiled by the nearly non playable games play and
constant disk swapping, if you can put up with this then you will
like this game.
At the beginning of this review, I was talking about parallax
scrolling, well when the hero (you) passes by a tree or whatever
the speed slows right down and spoils the gamesplay, I think that
Psygnosis would have to look in to this problem before they
release any further killing games, with this type of scrolling.
So until we meet again my friends, I must go and try and find some
more keys in the Infestation game.
